This is for those who think there is something wrong with the way we live, believe it can be fixed, and are doing what they can to fix it. For these, this is something to consider. In the name of simplicity, let’s pretend there are two teams. There is the change team and there is the same team. The change team wants change. The same team wants to keep things the same. Let’s also assume at eighteen years of age you get to choose a team. And yes, if you decide not to choose you are defaulted…

Reparations are misleading

I recently shared an idea on facebook that I thought I would share here.  There has recently been a lot more talk in the US about reparations for brown people. (Yes, I use the terms brown and peach instead of black and white as black and white immediately conjours up diametrical imagery in the mind and fosters division). The reparations argument is another way of misleading...their money means their system. Usage of their money represents their ownership. Demanding more of their money only…

✂© ➽➽➽ INDIVIDUAL AND WHOLE   Freedom is not a possession or a property; it is a relation. It is not a matter of being protected from the outside world, but of intersecting in a way that maximizes the possibilities. ➽➽➽ SELF-DETERMINATION   The open secret is that we do all have complete self-determination: not because it’s given to us, but because not even the most totalitarian dictatorship could take it away. Yet as soon as we begin to act…

There is considerable momentum building here in the US around the concept of a Green New Deal. At the moment it remains vague enough to bring together liberals like Corey Booker and radicals like DSA and System Change Not Climate Change (both groups I belong to). Multiple versions abound, from the Green Party, Sunrise Movement, Data For Progress, Climate Justice Alliance, etc...Just enough nostalgic, populist Americanismto intrigue YES Magazine, enough language around justice and planning to bring…

"One of the very first requirements for a man who is fit to handle pig iron as a regular occupation is that he shall be so stupid and so phlegmatic that he more nearly resembles in his mental make-up the ox than any other type. The man who is mentally alert and intelligent is for this very reason entirely unsuited to what would, for him, be the grinding monotony of work of this character. Therefore the workman who is best suited to handling pig iron is unable to understand the real science of doing…

John Lennon sang "We all want to change the world" and now, after a bit of hesitation, this includes the alpha elite. Confused John believed the answer was to "free your mind". The Davos crowd rally under the banner of "do good AND do well", as evidenced by the 2018 "Change the World issue of Fortune Magazine (Sept.) Titled Make the World Great Again ( remember these folks are transnational) How to Profit While Fixing the Planet, the cover article highlights the greenwashing efforts of "concerned…

Rupture Considered

Just finished re-reading Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, the penultimate anti-rupture argument. In it the Brotherhood works to ignite a rupture, in this case a race riot, hoping to spark revolution. It does not work out so well. Echoing many of the sentiments of those who respond to my rupture essay. I've been reading lots of crazy-ass fiction lately but Invisible Man takes it to a new level. Some of the surreal, nightmare scenes just left me stunned and I'm sure I'm mising half the mythology and…

Once upon a time in the Confederacy, a benevolent slave owner named Orrin noticed some of his property acting...restless. When I say benevolent I mean he recognized that a well-fed slave, one with decent housing and a mattress would be more productive. So Orrin went the extra mile to provide certain amenities, certainly more than his neighbor the Cruel Slave Master, who had a different business philosophy. This Cruel man starved his chattel and then whipped them to extract as much labor as possible…
