There is considerable momentum building here in the US around the concept of a Green New Deal. At the moment it remains vague enough to bring together liberals like Corey Booker and radicals like DSA and System Change Not Climate Change (both groups I belong to). Multiple versions abound, from the Green Party, Sunrise Movement, Data For Progress, Climate Justice Alliance, etc...Just enough nostalgic, populist Americanismto intrigue YES Magazine, enough language around justice and planning to bring…

"One of the very first requirements for a man who is fit to handle pig iron as a regular occupation is that he shall be so stupid and so phlegmatic that he more nearly resembles in his mental make-up the ox than any other type. The man who is mentally alert and intelligent is for this very reason entirely unsuited to what would, for him, be the grinding monotony of work of this character. Therefore the workman who is best suited to handling pig iron is unable to understand the real science of doing…

John Lennon sang "We all want to change the world" and now, after a bit of hesitation, this includes the alpha elite. Confused John believed the answer was to "free your mind". The Davos crowd rally under the banner of "do good AND do well", as evidenced by the 2018 "Change the World issue of Fortune Magazine (Sept.) Titled Make the World Great Again ( remember these folks are transnational) How to Profit While Fixing the Planet, the cover article highlights the greenwashing efforts of "concerned…

Just finished re-reading Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, the penultimate anti-rupture argument. In it the Brotherhood works to ignite a rupture, in this case a race riot, hoping to spark revolution. It does not work out so well. Echoing many of the sentiments of those who respond to my rupture essay. I've been reading lots of crazy-ass fiction lately but Invisible Man takes it to a new level. Some of the surreal, nightmare scenes just left me stunned and I'm sure I'm mising half the mythology and…

Once upon a time in the Confederacy, a benevolent slave owner named Orrin noticed some of his property acting...restless. When I say benevolent I mean he recognized that a well-fed slave, one with decent housing and a mattress would be more productive. So Orrin went the extra mile to provide certain amenities, certainly more than his neighbor the Cruel Slave Master, who had a different business philosophy. This Cruel man starved his chattel and then whipped them to extract as much labor as possible…

Andreas Malm uses the term "induced implosion" and quotes Benjamin 'The destructive character has the consciousness of historical man, whose deepest emotion is an insuperable mistrust of the course of things and a readiness at all times to recognize that everything can go wrong...What exists he reduces to rubble- not for the sake of the rubble but for that of the way leading through it....It is Nature that dictates his tempo, indirectly at least, for he must forestall her. Otherwise she will take…

when considering the question of how we "should" move forward as a species or global society.. we're faced with a host of dilemmas, maybe more difficult than ever.. given the current population, ongoing ecological damage including climate change, and massive disparity of wealth, resources, and technology between regions around the globe. we're also faced with differences in ideological beliefs and varying degrees of understanding and knowledge of what any of that means to any particular individual..…

I woke the other morning from a vague vision/ dreamscape of Paul Klee's Angelus Novus and Walter Benjamin's prophetic take from his Thesis on the Philosophy of History. Weird, right? I hadn't read the thing in years and then barely understood the basic premise. But then I realized I had been reading about the California fires and wondered if my subconscious was trying to work something out. Benjamin writes: "a storm is blowing in from Paradise, it has caught in his (Klee;s Angel) wings with such…
